The scientific principle behind hydraulics is called Pascal's Principle. Pascal's Law or Pascal's Principle is the backbone of fluid mechanics and was discovered by Blaise Pascal in 1653 and published in 1663. According to this principle, if the pressure at any point in a hydraulic fluid changes, the energy will be transmitted evenly in all directions. When you apply pressure to a fluid, the pressure will be evenly distributed and will not decrease. The fluid pressure will be equal in all parts of the container.
According to Pascal's Principle, pressure is equal to force divided by the area acted on. Pressure applied to a piston creates the same pressure increase on the second piston in the system. If the area is 10 times that of the first, the force on the second piston is also 10 times, even if the pressure is the same throughout the cylinder. Hydraulic presses create this effect based on Pascal's Principle. Pascal also discovered that the pressure at a point in a stationary fluid is the same in all directions; the pressure is the same on all planes passing through a particular point.
